The Krengo data field for Garmin

The field shows the bicycle’s lean angle live from the Krengo sensor, warns when the pedal is close to the ground, and shows a grip model in six colours. Read this page once before your first ride.

Status: coming. The field is not published in the Connect IQ Store yet. It is coming. It has been tested on fictional data and in the simulator, not with a real sensor on a real Edge. This page describes how the field is designed to work; it is not confirmed on a bike.

Add the field to your Edge

While the field is not in the Connect IQ Store, you install it from a file (sideload). When it is published, it will be a normal install from the Connect IQ app on your phone. The field needs an Edge (or watch) whose Connect IQ has Bluetooth LE; Edge 130, 130 Plus, 520 Plus and 1030 Bontrager lack it and are not supported.

  1. Connect the Edge to a computer by USB. Copy krengo-<model>.prg to the GARMIN/APPS folder and eject the device.
  2. On the Edge: open your profile, Data Screens, pick a page and a data field, then choose Connect IQ and Krengo.
  3. Switch the sensor on and leave it still and upright. The field shows SEARCHING and CONNECTING, then CALIBRATING until the gyro is ready. Keep the bike still until the number appears.
  4. Set the upright zero once (see below) if the number is not about 0° when the bike stands straight.

Choose surface and level

Change settings in the Garmin Connect app (Connect IQ settings for Krengo) or in Garmin Express. The grip model can also be set on the Edge itself. Both write the same values. Choose before the ride: changing a choice resets the history the model uses.

  1. Switch on Show grip model (experimental). It is off by default.
  2. Choose Surface: Dry fresh asphalt, Dry worn asphalt (default), Wet asphalt, Gravel / loose, or Unknown. Unknown gives GX, not a guess.
  3. Choose Cornering level: New, Settled (default), Experienced or Racer. Choose by how consistently you manage vision, line, body position and braking before turning. It is your own assessment.

A higher level does not give the tyre more grip. It only makes the model’s reserve smaller, so the colour becomes more optimistic. Choose honestly, and choose lower if unsure.

“What do the colours mean” is also a page on the Edge, under the grip settings. Use next/previous to page and Back to leave.

Other settings you may need:

Common settings
SettingDefaultWhat it does
Invert left/rightoffSwitch on if + shows when you lean left (sensor mounted the other way round).
Zero offset (degrees)0Subtracted from the lean. Read the number with the bike upright and still and type it in.
Set sensor zero (once)offAsks the sensor to store the upright position. Do it with the bike upright and still; needs the newer sensor protocol.
Pedal signal: screen / vibration / toneon / on / onVibration and tone only where the device has them.
Pedal touch-down angle0 = calculateType your own measured angle to override the calculation.
Warn this many degrees before3How early the pedal warning comes.
Goal angle0 = offOne short vibration per turn when you get within 2° of it.
Turn counts from this lean (degrees)10The lean from which a turn is counted.
Show tenths of a degreeonOff shows whole degrees.

What you see on screen

The big number is the lean now. + is right and − is left (flip it in settings). These status words replace the number. The field never shows an old angle.

  • NO LINKThe sensor is not connected.
  • NO DATAConnected, but the sensor is silent.
  • STALEThe data is older than one second.
  • SENSORSensor fault.
  • CALIBRATINGThe gyro is calibrating. Hold the bike still.
  • BLE ERRORBluetooth failed.

Other text: L 38.2° R 41.0° is the largest lean each way this ride (only while the timer runs). LAST R 38° 3.2s is the turn you just finished, shown for six seconds. TURNS 14 is the turn count; a turn is at least 10° and lasts at least 0.8 s. NEW PR appears once per side per ride when you beat the “previous personal best” in the settings.

The colours G1–G6 and GX

The grip model (“GRIP*” on the field) estimates how much of an assumed capacity you are using. The capacity is an estimate from the surface and level you chose. Speed above 40 km/h and a fast rise in lean add extra margin.

  • G1 ROOMGreen. Low utilisation in the model.
  • G2 ROOMLight green. Still plenty of room.
  • G3 BUSYYellow. Active use.
  • G4 NEAROrange. Near the model limit.
  • G5 OVERRed. Above the model limit.
  • G6 HIGHPurple. Far above the model limit.
  • UNKNOWN (GX)White. No estimate: unknown surface, invalid sensor or missing data.

This is a model, not a measurement. 100% is the model’s selected limit, not detected slipping. Tyres, water, leaves, braking and body position can make the estimate wrong, even at green. Never treat green as permission to increase speed.

Example from the model: 25° of lean at 30 km/h on dry worn asphalt gives G3 (yellow) at level Settled but G2 at Experienced. On wet asphalt at level New the same angle becomes G6 (purple). The difference comes from your choices; it does not prove that any of the turns are dangerous or safe.

The pedal signal

The pedal signal is geometry, not grip. It tells you how close the inside pedal is to touching the ground, calculated from your bike’s measurements.

  • CLEAR*You are clear of the pedal limit. The asterisk means this is a model (static, lower inside pedal), not a measurement of pedal contact.
  • PEDAL NEARThe lean is at or near where the pedal can touch down. Keep the pedals level. The warning stays until you are 3° below the warning level.

Vibration and tone go straight from the sensor packets (5 per second) and are the fast channel. The screen only redraws about once a second, so the colour can be up to a second late. The warning also looks slightly ahead while the lean is growing. Read it as “you are in the zone”, not as a guarantee.

The default limit is calculated from bottom bracket height 270 mm, crank length 170 mm, pedal reach 125 mm and pedal thickness 17 mm: about 36.2°, with the warning 3° earlier, at about 33.2°. That is an estimate.

Calibrate your own pedals

Better to measure your own limits. Do this standing still, with recording off:

  1. In the settings, under Pedal calibration (local): give the bike a profile number and a name.
  2. Choose Calibrate left or Calibrate right, and increase the action number by 1.
  3. Stand beside the bike on level ground. Put the selected pedal fully down, lean gently to first light contact, hold 2 s, straighten, and repeat.
  4. The field shows UPRIGHT, LEAN, HOLD and finally CAL OK. The source shows as LOCAL, MANUAL or ESTIMATE.

Load and tyre pressure can make the real clearance smaller than when the bike is standing. Do not try contact while moving and do not sit on the bike. A value typed into “Pedal touch-down angle” overrides the calibration.

Small fields and large fields

The field adapts to the space. A small field gives you the angle (or a status word) and, if the grip model is on, a short G tag with a number. The tag always has both text and a number, so it can be read without telling colours apart.

Larger fields add the pedal row, a bar showing the angle against your scale, the largest lean each side this ride, the last turn (side, peak, duration) and the turn count. If three rows do not fit, the field keeps angle/status and a full-width grip tag; the explanation is then in the settings.

Tip: to see the grip colour first and foremost, use a field that is at least half a data page.

Troubleshooting

The Krengo data field for Garmin
DisplayWhat it means and what to do
NO LINK / SEARCHINGCheck that the sensor is on and nearby (Bluetooth LE). The field searches and reconnects by itself after a loss; if the link stays gone for a while it releases and rescans after about 20 s. Power the sensor off and on if that does not help.
NO DATAThe link is up but the sensor is not sending. Wait a few seconds; restart the sensor if it persists.
STALEPackets are over a second old: weak signal, too far away, or metal between sensor and Edge. The number is hidden until fresh data arrives.
CALIBRATINGThe gyro is not ready. Hold the bike perfectly still for a moment.
SENSORThe sensor reports a fault. Restart it. If it persists, have the sensor checked before use.
BLE ERRORBluetooth on the Edge failed. Restart the data field or the device.
The angle has the wrong signSwitch on “Invert left/right”.
The angle is not 0° with the bike uprightSet the zero: read the number while still and upright and type it in as Zero offset, or use “Set sensor zero (once)”.
The colour is UNKNOWN / GXYou chose “Unknown” as surface, or data is missing right now. Pick a surface, or wait until the sensor is valid.
No grip tagThe grip model is off by default. Switch on “Show grip model”.

What the field is not

  • The field is not in the Connect IQ Store yet: coming.
  • Tested on fictional data and in the simulator. Not on a real Edge with a real sensor, not on a bike.
  • The grip colour is a model from your own choices, not measured grip. The pedal signal is geometry, not detected contact.
  • The field writes lean and the pedal signal into the FIT file (developer fields), so the ride can be analysed later.

Frequently asked questions

Is the field in the Connect IQ Store?

No, not yet. It is coming. Until then it is installed from a file.

Does green mean the turn is safe?

No. Green means low utilisation in a model with your choices and assumed numbers. Actual grip is not measured.

Why does the colour change when I choose Racer?

The level makes the model’s reserve smaller. The tyre does not get more grip. Choose the level that honestly describes you.

Which Garmin devices are supported?

Edge 530, 540, 550, 830, 840, 850, 1030, 1030 Plus, 1040, 1050, Explore, Explore 2 and MTB, fēnix 7 and 8, Forerunner 965 and 970, and epix 2.
